Invisalign® Q & A

by C. Anthony LoPresti, DDS

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a cosmetic dental procedure which is used to gradually straighten a patient’s teeth over time. Invisalign® is different than traditional braces because the inserts worn by patients are clear and practically invisible, hence the name. The Invisalign® aligners are custom made for each person’s teeth using x-rays and impressions and worn throughout the straightening process.

How do the Aligners Work?

While every case will be unique, the doctor will design a treatment plan and a set of aligners will be made to fit and adjust the patient’s teeth. The aligners are made from BPA-free plastic which is smooth and comfortable to wear. Patients will wear the aligners every day and remove them to eat and brush their teeth. As the patient continues to wear the aligners, his or her teeth will slowly begin to shift into place. Usually, the aligners will be changed every two weeks and should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. The entire process takes approximately a year in adults and around the same amount of time as braces for teens.

What Advantages does Invisalign® Offer?

While traditional braces cannot be removed during the process, Invisalign® aligners can be removed for eating or whenever the person needs. Additionally, Invisalign® aligners are clear and made from a smooth plastic, while traditional braces are made of metal which can irritate a person’s cheeks and gums. The aligners can also be removed when brushing or flossing which makes it much easier to continue good oral hygiene habits throughout the process.

Is Invisalign® covered by insurance?

Some insurance plans do provide at least partial coverage for Invisalign®, but other dental plans do not. When insurance doesn't cover the costs, there are financing plans available to help make the cost of treatment more affordable.
